Zendium has an active formulation that boosts salivary defences
Saliva: the mouth’s natural protection system
Saliva naturally helps to promote and maintain a healthy mouth. It contains a remarkable blend of enzymes and proteins that defend against bacteria associated with disease and helps maintain a healthy microbial balance. The salivary peroxidase system drives the production of natural antibacterial agents, including hypothiocyanite which is generated from hydrogen peroxide and thiocyanate. This system, along with others, helps prevent harmful bacteria from dominating the microbiome and protects against oral problems.
Zendium’s formulation reflects several natural components of saliva
Zendium is a daily fluoride toothpaste that incorporates some of the enzymes and proteins that contribute to the natural salivary defence system. It contains a triple enzyme system of amyloglucosidase, glucose oxidase and lactoperoxidase to drive production of natural salivary antibacterial components. Zendium also contains three other ingredients, lysozyme, lactoferrin and colostrum as a source of IgG, that can be found naturally in saliva and work in harmony with enzymes to protect the mouth.
The enzymes and proteins in Zendium help to boost salivary defences
In a series of in vivo and in vitro experiments and a clinical study published in the Journal of Dentistry, Cawley et al. measured the effect of Zendium on the levels of key salivary components (lysozyme, hydrogen peroxide and hypothiocyanite) in saliva when compared with a standard fluoride toothpaste. The researchers also investigated the effect of Zendium on harmful oral bacteria.
Compared with the control toothpaste, Zendium significantly increased the level of all three antimicrobial components in saliva. Zendium also inhibited the growth of harmful bacteria and reduced their virulence. These results are consistent with Zendium’s mode of action in boosting salivary defences and maintaining the balance of oral bacteria.
